Description
A beautifully carved mahogany box perfectly suited as a cocktail table next to an armchair or a sofa. On the front of the box is a carved panel with a depiction of a schooner under which the phrase “Such is Life” appears on a ribbon; on the back is a heraldic shield with the motto “Hope On, Hope Ever” and to the sides are elaborate roundels with “Tempest Fugit” (n.b. not Tempus Fugit). The box itself has a lift top and is useful storage for files or magazines. Given the ship motif, the box is probably a paean to the arduous nautical life of a seaman. Scottish, circa 1840.
