Rare late 19th century Indian bone and faux tortoiseshell model of the Visakhapatnam lighthouse with carved bone arrow weathervane over etched and polished coconut husk dome over galleried searchlight platform, the body overlaid with pierced bone over faux tortoise shell veneer, on an engraved and stepped plinth base. Formerly referred to as Waltair, an overtly British colonial name, Visakhapatnam is the third largest city in India and was renown for work such as this combination of filigree bone and tortoiseshell and for exquisite attention to detail in most handiwork. Visakhapatnam produced goods in exotic materials for export beginning in the 17th century and is highly sought after today.
