Hawley, a British born artist, made his name and fortune in the US for his drawings and paintings of architecture. He was incredibly prolific, claiming to have executed over 11,000 works. He was commercially very successful too and his works brought significant sums. At a New York exhibition where one of John LeFarge’s works was offered at $475, Hawley’s was tagged at $800, a high figure for a work by a living artist in the early 1900s.
