Description

Fine and rare Charles II period (1660-1685) oak chest on frame with etched mother of pearl and bone inlay, the top with molded edge over alternating narrow and deep drawers flanked and centered by carved flowering vines, the panels with floral and vine inlay in holly, bone and mother of pearl flat fields with applied molded borders, the sides with two long panels, standing on later arcaded stand with bun feet below, the front carved to match the upper section. The whole retaining very rich color and patination.
Retaining the retail label of S&H Jewell 31-32 High Holborn, London.
According to the Furniture History Society, S & H Jewell began as cabinet makers and bed and mattress manufacturers in 1831. By the time they relocated to High Holborn in the 1930s, the firm had given up the furniture making side of the business and were well regarded antique furniture dealers. The firm ceased trading in 1941. It is highly likely they made the stand for this chest. Both top and bottom retain their celluloid labels.
