Description

A George III breakfront secretary bookcase of refined design and superb craftsmanship.  Features include finely figured mahogany timber, an upper case with adjustable shelving and eight shelves behind four operable doors with elegant diamond paned astragal glazing below a gothic carved trellised swan neck pediment with pierced fretwork surrounded by a ogee molded cornice, all above four large graduated drawers with chequered inlay banding with original wreath handled brass double pulls stepped out from cupboards to either side with concave molded doors with raised beading, rosewood cross banding, conforming chequered inlay band and inwardly curved corners each with a carved rosette, with a pull out sliding tooled leather secretary or writing surface above the top drawer and scalloped storage dividers to the drawer beneath, all on a plinth base.  England, circa 1785.
