A Pair of Rare Genoese Green Cut Velvet Wall Hangings c. 1580
$18,800
Description
Two important 16th century Genoese wall hangings in a remarkable state of preservation, featuring cut silk velvet designs including urns, lions, birds and foliate decoration, backed with linen. Impressive scale. Velvet-weaving was a rare skill, particularly when differing pile levels were used, as here, and a weaver with his loom could reputedly produce only 3″ a day of fabric. Bearing a label to the back for Ernest Lo Nano Interiors, a famous New York based designer who played a key part in restoring Colonial Williamsburg staring in the 1950s.
