Unusual pair of George III boxes, having patera inlaid tops and fronts on a spalted walnut ground and with original gilt lacquer axe head handles, one fitted with two compartments, the other as a large, undivided interior, both retaining original faux tortoise printed paper. Note, while clearly made as companions, the boxes have differences, both in the aforementioned interior, but also in the scale of the patera inlay. (An interesting theory being that the owner could reach for the right box knowing by the size and placement of the inlay, which one was the tea caddy).
