English Folk Art Trade Sign

An important wall-mounted English Folk Art trade sign in the form of a nearly life size weathered fisherman wearing his traditional oilskin overalls and jacket with his catch on his back. A fish-oil merchant would have displayed him outside its premises as an indication of the goods being sold in the days before universal literacy. This fisherman, codfish in tow, is deeply carved and with wonderful surface formed by a combination of old ship's varnish and salt from the sea air. This old salt is Illustrated "Folk Art" by Robert Young on pages 70 and 71 (Mitchell Beazley 1999).
