An enchanted stag captured in mid-stride. He has a whimsical expression on his turned face, alert ears and is standing in a watchful pose with a raised right front paw. This is a very rare 18th century English garden statue in heavy lead. It is modelled after the Antique Roman and based on one excavated from the Villa dei Papyri in Herculaneum. Several Georgian casts in bronze are known of the accompanying faun, while lead examples are far less common and stags are rarely seen.
